The Empty Circle Zen Group of Northwest Indiana is part of the Kwan Um School of Zen, an international organization founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn the first Korean Zen Master to live and teach in the West. The group is associated with the Indianapolis Zen Center. Led by Jerry Ashmore, a Senior Dharma Teacher with over 30 years of experience, the group meets twice a week in Hobart Indiana. Practice includes guided meditation, walking meditation and chanting, and ends with socializing and camaraderie with fellow practitioners. For details on the practice check out the Practice page.
Jerry Ashmore began practicing Zen Buddhism over 30 years ago which is around the time he established the Empty Circle Zen group in Hobart Indiana. He has continued to lead Empty Circle, teaching Zen dharma and guided meditation. Jerry concentrates not only on the dharma but also the neurological and physiological effects of meditation, and teaches how Zen practice and meditation can be applied to help with the challenges of everyday life.

Our programs include Foundations of Zen classes, retreats with authentic teachers, public dharma talks, cultural presentations and a weekly schedule of practice sessions. These activities are designed to support and inspire our efforts to perceive our true nature. The Indianapolis Zen Center is a member of the Kwan Um School of Zen, an international organization founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn, the first Korean Zen Master to live and teach in the West. Our center was founded in 1991. Our Guiding Teacher is Lincoln Rhodes, JDPSN, one of Zen Master Seung Sahn’s earliest students in the United States.
